How does it feel to be in the union?
Being in the union feels like being in Google 10 years ago. People are energetic and creative, everyone can be honest about their feelings, and things make sense here. I want you to join the union to feel the same.

Why did you join the union?
I’ve always said that the people are what makes me really enjoy working at Google in Japan.

Support the union to protect Googlers’ rights and to restore the ethical and equitable workplace Google once had.
The layoffs aren’t over The company crossed ethical boundaries in several ways, including:
Relentlessly harassing employees to sign separation agreements.
Outsourcing difficult conversations related to layoffs.
Cancelling previously agreed upon childcare leave to expedite layoffs.
Taking away the roles of employees who did not sign separation agreements and assigning them to unfair/unjust positions.

What to do if you’re ‘impacted’
What to do if you’re ‘impacted’ Information from the Google Japan Union, March 2023
Google Japan has just announced lay-offs and sent emails to staff who were ‘impacted’, offering them a severance package. This document explains what to do if you receive one of those emails.
You have not been laid off, so don’t give up Japanese law about lay-offs is very clear: a profitable company like Google cannot lay people off.

General FAQ Google Japan Union What is Google Japan Union? Google Japan Union is a worker union that is open to any workers of Google in Japan. This union is formed by Googlers for Googlers to protect our rights to collectively bargain with the company. Currently, we are a branch of Tokyo Managers Union (TMU), which is an amalgamation union that has branches in other companies in Japan. We chose TMU because of their experience dealing with similar international tech companies, including Apple, Amazon, and Indeed, as well as their experience fighting for the rights of international and domestic workers in Japan.

Non union member You should attempt to negotiate for a better package, but your position may be weak.
You can attempt to reject the package and retain employment, but your position may be weak.
The company may retaliate against you if you attempt to keep your job.
